Build Your Own Iontophoresis Machine at Home

by Jason on March 29, 2009

This is a great Step-by-Step instructional video on how to create your own iontophoresis device at home.

Rather than visiting a treatment center and paying for continuous iontophoresis therapy, make a little project for yourself by putting one of these systems together. You’ll save a bunch of money by having the device right in your home and it’ll make the treatments a whole lot more convenient.

It’s pretty easy to make the system and the video below does a great job of explaining the components of an iontophoresis device.

It’s very important that you follow the instructions in the video – especially when it comes to connecting the batteries to the device.

Although with voltages as low as these batteries emit, it’s difficult hurt yourself, you can potentially create sparks by connecting the cables incorrectly. Just take a moment to ensure you are following the video’s instructions exactly.

Good video Jason.. Thank you very much..

avatar lisa April 30, 2009 at 11:15 am

How do I apply this to my armpits?

avatar admin April 30, 2009 at 11:43 am

Thanks for your question Lisa. Although they DO make Iontophoresis (Drionic) machines that you can use for your underarms, this specific configuration works only for palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis (hand & foot sweating)

avatar Ayşegül May 18, 2009 at 11:45 am

Thanks for the video jason..
i have tried it…i have some questions about it though:

Do we use both hands at the same time in different containers or one hand for a while and then another for a while? Can we have both same sided hand and foot at the same time in same container?

avatar ayşegül May 19, 2009 at 12:24 am

and also one more question…
Can we add salt to improve results?

avatar admin May 20, 2009 at 8:18 am

Actually, you’ll want to add some Baking Soda to improve results. You can also speak to your dermatologist about getting a hyperhidrosis topical solution to mix into the water.

avatar admin May 20, 2009 at 8:22 am

You should have BOTH hands in SEPARATE trays at the same time. This allows your body to complete the circuit.
I recommend you perform this on your feet separately. Treat your hand first and THEN try it out on your feet.
Remember, this is a homemade device. If you buy a professional one in a store, I’m sure you’ll have the option of treating both your hands and feet together.

OK. What do I do if I am a head and face sweater? Place my face in the pans. I don’t think I can hold my breath for 10 minutes.

avatar admin May 25, 2009 at 10:38 am

Ha. Of course not! :) Iontophoresis is specifically for hand and foot sweating. Occasionally you can use it for armpit sweating if you have the right pads. I’ll be showing you treatments for facial sweating in other posts throughout this site. Do NOT dip your face in the pans! lol

avatar anton May 29, 2009 at 4:22 am

Do you submerge the whole hand in the water, or just the surface of the palms? Thanks for an answer.

avatar admin May 29, 2009 at 5:25 am

You only need to submerge the surface of your palms (or feet).

avatar anton May 30, 2009 at 1:42 am

Thanks for the quick answer.
I’ve got another one: After you’ve filled the pie pans, how do you determine the amount of baking salt that is needed. A teaspoonful per pan? Less? More?

avatar John June 14, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Hi, I just wanted to add something about Dryclor. I picked it up, and stopped using it, cause it used to itch like mad! But…..I now tried putting it on, left it on as long as I could stand, then washed it off with cold water. The next time wasn’t itchy at all! now i have been using it every second night for a week or so and my armpits don’t sweat at all. Nothing. I hope this story may help others who have tried Dryclor, but were overwhelmed with the itchy sensation it can give you.

avatar DC June 15, 2009 at 2:49 am

Thanks for the video. Question about the water…
Is it necessary to add anything? I thought iontophoresis required some sort of hyperhidrosis topical solution for this process to work (but I’ve never done it, so I really don’t know).

Also, what types of hyperhidrosis topical solutions are appropriate? If I have drysol, can I just add some of this to the water? will that help?
Thank you.

avatar admin June 15, 2009 at 3:05 am

You can add baking soda. I’ve heard salt can help too, although I’ve never tried it. Yes, if you get the treatment done at a dermatology treatment center, they may add any one of various topicals. The real power, though, is in the alternating currents.

This really really works!! Ive had sweaty hands and feet as long as I can remember.. Not good ! But since I built my own machine and used it for 2 weeks i’m as dry as can be.. I’ve just moved to China and living in 40 degrees can be hard with this problem , but not anymore haha , I just want to say thank u thank u !!!

avatar Ondra July 9, 2009 at 7:35 am

Hi, i’d like to make my own device, i just would like to ask you a question. What wires do you use? I searched on the internet and i found plenty of types of wires, so it would be great to know which one to buy. :) Thank you so much!

avatar J July 12, 2009 at 11:27 am

Wow, glad I found this video. I am about to build this today, and will let you all know my results. I have a quick question tho, I don’t have a volt meter, so do you know how long the batteries will last? Say if I did this treatment for 2 weeks, would it be just as effective on the 14th day as the 1st? Also, once I feel it has worked and my sweating has decreased, how often should I come back and do this again? Once a week, a month? Longer? I appreciate any response, thanks a lot

avatar admin August 2, 2009 at 12:51 pm

That’s a great question. It should last about a week to a week and a half depending on how long your treatment sessions are. My suggestion? Just stick with the batteries until they either die out of the 14 days are up. You’ll need to experiment to decide whether or not to swap out fresh ones.

I would start out doing this about once or twice a week max. Once you know how sensative your skin becomes, you can up the sessions from there. Take care!!! :)

avatar admin August 2, 2009 at 12:54 pm

The video explains that they are “Test Leads”. You can buy them in the automotive section of most department or hardware stores. They simply need to conduct electricity. Cheers!

avatar Jill August 2, 2009 at 5:16 pm

This looks a little scary, what does it feel like when you have your hands in the water? Tingly or what?

avatar Roel August 4, 2009 at 10:50 am

I read thar some users put some Drysol or Dryclor in the water.
Is this not dangerous because of the chemical reaction of substances in those solutions in the ionisation process?
Please let me know.

avatar admin August 5, 2009 at 1:10 pm

It’s a little tingly. Some say it causes skin irritation. You don’t have to be scared of the treatment by any means. The charge in the water is very very small.

avatar zain August 14, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Hi, i have a question. What batteries are you suppose to use, i know your suppose to use 4x6v but what amperage does it have to have? can you provide the exact name or link to the batteries.
Thanks

avatar macky August 17, 2009 at 1:07 pm

can i ask what if i want to use the dc current instead of a battery,,,uhm is it ok if im gonna use the dc adapter, adjust it to certain voltage and put a couple of alligator clip at the end of both wire and then connect it directly to the stainless steel pans

avatar lauren August 25, 2009 at 4:01 pm

is it true that this treatment can cause brain cancer?I read that the high amounts of alluminum absorbed from the hefty pans can lead to different forms of cancer?

avatar Karen Sproles September 8, 2009 at 6:56 am

This is the most wonderful thing I have ever come across!! After one session, my hands were dry all the next day. This is day two and they are still dry. I am a sales clerk and this will be my first day back since the treatment so tonight will tell the tale, but I have a good feeling about it. All of my life I have suffered with sweaty hands to the point of them actually dripping. Everything I touch gets wet and it’s so humiliating. I really can’t thank you enough for this video. I hope this helps someone else who’s wondering if they should try this, YES, YES, YES!!

avatar admin September 14, 2009 at 3:25 am

There have been some studies that have linked high aluminum levels in the brain with Alzheimer’s disease but nothing conclusive. Aluminum put directly into the bloodstream can have very adverse affects on brain function but that shouldn’t scare you away from using deodorant.

There was a time where people linked pesticides used on produce to cause cancer. Does that mean everyone should stop eating apples? Until doctors formally come out with a warning on the label, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. Try not to be a hypochondriac about your deodorant use. There are a billion things to worry about in life before this one should even cross your mind.

avatar Tony September 19, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Other devices I’ve seen complete the circuit local to the hand. This is completing the circuit through the body, is that safe? Does it really work? Is this for real? :) If so, thanks for the video, it certainly looks promising.

avatar Tony September 19, 2009 at 3:19 pm

One other thing… I tried the Drionic device about 17 years ago. It did not work for me, but I may not have been able to use it long enough. It hurt badly whenever I had a cut on my hand. I’ve since read that vaseline eliminates the pain during treatment, but I haven’t tried it yet, has anyone else experienced this? I am going to try this out and will let you know how it goes. I have had very bad hyperhidrosis on my hands, feet and pits all my life (i’m 36 now). It’s extremely bad especially during even the slightest stressful situations, like giving a presentation or playing guitar or even just meeting someone new. I can think certain thoughts and my hands start dripping. Many times they sweat for no reason at all too, even when I’m relaxed, I’d say about 85% of the day, they’re sweating. Sometimes they’re dry though, rarely, but for example, at night just before bed if I’m extremely relaxed. Guitar playing, for me, is the main reason I wish to eliminate sweaty hands and also to shake hands with others without sliming them up!!! I imagine if the sweating stops, so also will the natural moisturizing of the skin. Has anyone experienced this? How do you address this when the sweat stops? Regular lotion, etc? Thanks all! I’ll be back!

avatar mahesh October 2, 2009 at 3:33 am

hiiiiiiiii,which a2 volts should i use?and which plates?

avatar Menor October 4, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I think it’s better and much more simple to use DC adapter as power source. You wouldn’t bothered by changing the battery any more. You won’t need to worry about wiring either.
The problem is, DC adapter with up to 24V output usually has 1000mA current. I read that the drionic device only took about 200mA. I don’t know if it’s too high, and have side effects, but I’m gonna try to use one later. And tell you the result once I used it.

avatar harry October 20, 2009 at 3:08 am

Thank you for this video.i will definately try this out.i am(20 yrs)nd hav the same problem like tony i just wanna ask that will this treatment really work out.and i want to ask tony that has he tried it nd wat has been the result

avatar Ben November 3, 2009 at 4:18 pm

For ongoing treatments do you ever recommend doing this setup and using a DC power supply? So you don’t need to keep buying batteries?

avatar anna November 12, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Hi, thank you for you demo on making the device, my husband put one together for me last night and my hands were actually drier when i finished, my feet were not as dry, however i am sure the more i use the device the better the results, i have been suffering from hyperhidrosis for over 25 yrs, so if this helps, and i am sure it will, i will be delighted, than you once again and i will keep you posted on my progress

regards
anna

Hi,
I’d like to clarify some things regarding the iontrophoresis procedure. From what I understood, it is to be done 3-4 times a week for about 2 weeks. I am aware that after a while, the sweating will come back. So my question is, how often am I supposed to do it after the initial 2 weeks? for maintenance of the dryness and such.. Do i wait until it sweats again, then do it for another 2 weeks straight? or just once every week after the initial 2 weeks? Also, does the time of day when the procedure is done matter? thanks very very much!

Hi, I am a sufferer of HH since I was a kid. I got it from my mother and one of my sister also suffers HH. I never thought that there’s a way to control my sweaty hands. But somehow I was determine to search for a way to cure it. I read through forums and other sites just try to seek for an answer. And finally I learn about iontophoresis. To thought that I should buy a iontophoresis machine that cost 2k in my country, I could not afford it. 25 years of excessive sweating, I found this site through a forum. Because I was desparate, I want to experiment this method so much that I decided to buy the things on the day I saw this clip. After 6-7 days of iontophoresis treatment, I cant believe that my hands were not sweating 2 whole days after that. What I can say is that, thank you so much to share with us this method. Now I know how to control my sweaty palms and feet. It work for me, hope that it will work for all of you out there that suffers from Hyperhidrosis that seems like an obstacle of many things that we would like to do but couldn’t because of embarrasing moment with other people. Thank you again Jason. I finally feel that I was able to control my life, at least for the sweating problems. Bless you.

Hey, how long do the batteries last before they run out?

avatar yup November 25, 2009 at 1:31 am

Is it normal to get a rash on your hands afterwards? I just did 4 batteries for 10 minutes and got a rash. Thanks!

avatar hustla December 11, 2009 at 1:41 am

Hello! Just wanted to know if drionic can cause any internal injury, such as i read on some other blog that it increases heart beat and risk cardiovascular!
Whoever knows about it plz let all of us know !
otherwise thumbs up for JASON!

avatar Darly December 12, 2009 at 9:50 am

Thank you! I’ll try this out and I’ll come back to say the results! I’m very confident about this!
Bless you!

avatar m.y. December 15, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Hi,
I’ve tried it and it worked wonderfull. My question is, is it normal to get a “shock” the first thing you deep the second hand in the pan, and is there a way to eliminate it? Though it is only for a second or two, and slowly fades away to a gentle tickling, but it’s quite frightening, and scares me every time to do it.
Thank you.

Can you make a video on how to make DIY iontophoresis machine for the axillae?
like this for example: http://www.iontophoresis.info/idrostar-axillae.html

avatar Erik January 11, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Hey, how many times a day can I do this? If I do it twice a day will there be any negative effects? Will the results be better if I do it twice a day if my skin allows?

avatar T.G. January 15, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Thanks for creating this video and website. I just finished my first treatment using 3 6v batteries. It does definitely tingle and I have some irritated skin on my knuckles but if this stops my hand sweat it is a small price to pay. After dunking my hands and completing the circuit it’s a breeze (T.V. helps).

I’ll be doubling up on my sessions each day. I’m excited to see this work!

Again, thank you for this video and website. More posts to come.

Hello,

I am 12 years old and suffer from excess sweating of my palms. I saw your youtube and gave the experiment a try. This is my 8th day doing inotophoresis and i have not seen any changes. I was wondering if I had to use a specific type of metal for the pans or if anytype is fine. Also, I have been using 3 6v batteries and have barely felt anyhing. Do you think i should use four? Thanks a lot!

avatar john February 10, 2010 at 12:07 am

hello umm… i have a question is it ok if i use 3 9v batteries or is that to high of a voltage?
