Controlling Excessive Sweating 101 – Tips for Keeping Embarrassing Sweat at Bay

by Jason on May 4, 2011

Controlling excessive sweating sounds great, doesn’t it? If you’re constantly sweating no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you probably feel very aggravated and upset. The problem can have severe effects on your social life and career. Controlling the problem isn’t always easy, either – it all depends on the primary cause.

Controlling excessive sweating is possible, at least! You really can get the relief that you need if you know what’s causing the problem, or at least have an idea of what could be causing it.

What Causes Excessive Sweating, Anyway?

A number of factors could be causing the problem. For some people, profuse sweating is a symptom of another condition, such as diabetes, menopause, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety, etc.

If you’re in great health then you could be triggering the sweat by the types of food and drinks you consume. A lot of spicy foods, junk foods, carbonated drinks, caffeine, and artificial sweeteners can cause sweating. Pay close attention to what you eat and drink every day, and whether or not you start sweating after eating or drinking anything specific.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Very few people have a sweating problem in its primary form. Most people suffer from excessive sweating due to one of the aforementioned medical conditions or triggers. However, primary hyperhidrosis is a real problem believed to be associated with the sympathetic nervous system. Treating excessive sweating in this form can be a real challenge. Some patients even resort to surgery.

The good news is that it can be controlled, although the amount of control varies from one sufferer to the next.

No matter what is causing you to sweat so much, here are some tips on how to control the problem:

• Shower or bathe every single day. Use an unscented soap or body wash to wash away the bacteria on your skin. Bacteria can make your sweating problem worse, so get rid of as much of it as possible.

• Meditation can really help control the sweat glands. You don’t have to be sitting down to meditate. This is something you can learn how to do anywhere at any time. You must practice breathing exercises and relaxation techniques every day. Before you know it, you’ll be able to control your nerves and stress level on the spot. When your nerves are calm, you will sweat less.

• Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of home remedies. Cornstarch, for instance, can be very helpful. Sprinkle some on the affected area and it will absorb moisture. If that’s not enough, you can put an extra strength antiperspirant on over top of the cornstarch.

• Make sure you’re getting enough vitamins in your diet. Vitamin deficiency can cause excess perspiration. Eat a well-balanced diet and take vitamin supplements every day. Don’t deprive your body of any essential nutrients.

• Wear clothes that will allow your body to stay cool. Materials made out of cotton or wool are good choices. Wear a size larger than your usual size so that your body will be able to breathe. Also, avoid materials made from synthetic fibers, as they will trap body sweat and cause a pungent odor.

• If you suffer from excessive foot sweating, change your socks at least three times a day! Make sure you’re wearing a comfortable pair of shoes. There are some special shoes made with small holes in the bottom. Wear these so that the sweat can trickle away without anybody noticing. Plus, your feet will be kept cool when you are wearing shoes with small holes.

Following these tips will hopefully help you control your excessive sweating problem. Now that you have a better understanding of what causes the problem, you can go about getting the appropriate help.
