Are you always sweating, even when you shouldn’t be? Do you sweat in areas other than your underarms? If so, then you could have overactive sweat glands. This condition, known as hyperhidrosis, is characterized by hyperactivity of the eccrine sweat glands. It can be localized to one specific area, or generalized, consisting of excessive sweating throughout the body. Localized hyperhidrosis can be in areas such as the soles of feet, armpits, palms, groin area, and face.
The good news is that you are not alone in your suffering. Millions of people around the world have this condition. There are also treatments available for overactive sweat glands. In extreme cases, botox injections or even surgery is required. For mild cases, prescription strength antiperspirants and medication can help. Some people even use home remedies to prevent excess sweating.
One way you can treat your overactive sweat glands is to know what triggers them. Certain types of foods and chemicals stimulate sweat glands:
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Spicy food
- Junk food
- Niacin
- Viagra
- Nylon clothing
- Socks and shoes made out of synthetic materials
- Scented body lotions, soap, sprays, etc.
Now, if you suspect that your overactive sweat glands are caused by medications for other health problems, DO NOT stop taking them! Talk to your doctor about your concerns.
The best way to deal with hyperhidrosis on your own is to cut out certain vices such as caffeine and junk food. You should also drink tons of water. In fact, the more water you drink, the less you’ll sweat! Avoid using any scented hygiene products, as they contain chemicals that can trigger the sweat glands.
The type of clothing you wear can cause you to sweat more. Further, it might not absorb the sweat very well, resulting in a bad odor. Wear loose, light colored clothing made out of organic fabrics. Synthetic fabrics, like scented hygiene products, can stimulate the sweat glands. Fabrics made out of at least 70% cotton or wool can prevent excess sweating.
Some over-the-counter antiperspirants are strong enough to stop excessive sweating. Some can be used on different areas of the body. Make sure you choose one that contains at least 10% aluminum chloride. A few brands to check out include Drysol, Certain Dri, and Maxim.
There are some home remedies you can try to help with the problem. Some of these are “trial and error”, and the effects vary from person to person. Here are some tips:
- Make sure you get plenty of vitamins. Vitamins promote health, and the healthier you are, the less you’ll have to worry about excessive sweating.
- Drink apple cider every day. Apple cider has been used for many years as a remedy for a number of ailments and health conditions, including excess sweating.
- If you have to go somewhere, and are worried that you might break into a sweat, drink a cup of sage tea before leaving. Sage tea is one of the most well-known remedies for hyperhidrosis.
- Apply some lemon juice on the affected area(s). Lemon juice helps keep body odor at bay.
- Add chamomile to your bathwater. Chamomile oil will not only help you prevent sweating, it may also eliminate body odor.
These home remedies are used by many people to stop sweating naturally. Give these a try, watch your diet, drink a lot of water, and wear clothing made out of organic materials. Doing all of these will help you fight your overactive sweat glands!
