Learn Some Great Techniques to Help You Stop Excessive Underarm Sweating

by Jason on May 24, 2011

Excessive underarm sweating, or axillary hyperhidrosis, is both a physical and emotional condition. If your armpits are always sweating, you know how embarrassing the problem can be. Your social life may even be suffering because of your sweating problem. It’s hard to engage in physical activities when your body perspires more than it should.

You’ll be glad to know that it’s possible to stop excessive underarm sweating! There are a variety of treatments and techniques you can try in order to control the problem. The very first thing you need to do is to figure out why you’re sweating so much in the first place.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

• Does my family have a history of excessive sweating?

• Am I overweight?

• Do I have any other medical conditions that could be causing the sweating problem?

• Do I eat a healthy diet?

• Do I drink enough water?

• Do I have an addiction to any substances that could be causing me to sweat so much?

• What kind of fabrics are my shirts made out of?

What kind of antiperspirant or deodorant do I use?

• Is the sweat triggered whenever I am feeling anxious or stressed?

Axillary hyperhidrosis, in some cases, is secondary. This means it’s caused by another problem, such as substance abuse or a disease. In extreme cases, the nervous system itself causes the sweating. Since you can’t “cure” an overactive sympathetic nervous system, you must learn how to prevent it from being triggered in order to prevent sweating.

Here are some techniques you can try to control or stop excessive underarm sweating:

Get some underarm sweat pads. These will absorb the sweat so that your clothes won’t get wet. They won’t outright STOP the sweating, but they will absorb it so that your underarms will be able to breathe more. This helps to prevent odor and embarrassing stickiness.

Give acupuncture a try. This alternative medicine has been around for thousands of years. Tiny, thin needles are placed strategically around the body in order to eliminate blockages of chi energy. When chi energy flows smoothly through the body without any blockages, you will experience better health. This will help to stop whatever is causing you to sweat so much.

Start bathing or showering more. Even if you already do shower every single day, you need to start showering twice a day. Use a good anti-bacterial soap to clean away the bacteria under your arms. If you’re a woman, shave under your arms every day. If you’re a guy, you should at least trim the hair. Less hair means fewer bacteria, and less bacteria means less sweating.

• You’ll be surprised at how helpful tea can be when it comes to treating hyperhidrosis! Drink black tea or sage tea at least twice a day. Tea contains tannins, which are natural astringent compounds that can keep the skin dry.

• Watch your diet. If you don’t eat the healthiest foods or drink the healthiest beverages, you will sweat more. Research indicates that foods rich in spices and iodine can cause excessive sweating. Also, if you have extra body fat, you need to start exercising more. Losing some body fat and increasing your fitness level will result in less sweat being produced in your body.

Hopefully these techniques will work for you. You need to do as many of these as possible if you really want to stop excessive underarm sweating.
