While it’s normal to sweat at night, it’s not normal to wake up drenched in sweat every single night, surrounded by soaked sheets. If you find yourself waking up surrounded by soaked sheets on a regular basis, then you need to find out what is causing your excessive sweating at night.
Just know that you’re not suffering alone. Even though this problem is uncommon, it’s not rare. This is a condition experienced by many people for a variety of reasons, ranging from menopause to infections. It’s also an early sign of cancer, but if you’re not experiencing other symptoms such as high fever and weight loss, then you shouldn’t worry too much.
You can get relief for excessive sweating at night. First, you should try figuring out what is causing the problem. Here is a list of the common causes of night sweats:
• Menopause
• Infections such as abscesses or tuberculosis
• Hypoglycemia
• HIV/Aids
• Hormone disorders
• Neurologic conditions
• Eating spicy food right before bedtime
Drugs
Many illegal drugs and pharmaceutical drugs can cause night sweating. If you experience sweating around your cheeks and necks, there’s a chance that drugs could be responsible for the problem. Some medications that can cause sweating include aspirin, tamoxifen, Viagra, nitroglycerine, and niacin.
If you really need the medication, then don’t stop taking it! If you are taking illegal drugs, or abusing prescription drugs such as painkillers, then you need to get the appropriate help in order to overcome your addiction. Night sweating is the least of your worries if you have a drug addiction.
Unhealthy Diet
An unhealthy diet is another cause of excessive sweating at night. You should be careful of what you eat – especially around bedtime. Avoid spicy foods with a strong odor, such as onions, garlic, vinegar, peppers, etc.
Don’t drink a lot of caffeine or energy drinks throughout the day, either. It will take a while for the stimulants to wear off. Even if you do manage to fall asleep, the stimulants will still be in your system, causing you to perspire.
